In Transient Flashes, For a Transcendental Moment which Passes, Life (Can't You See?)

Is an Ecstasy

by Clover Kreger

I take my pleasure in kittens
so beautifully made, so perfectly proportioned,
so filled to the brim with life-force,
so eager to extend their energy
in satisfying their boundless curiosity
And birds; I’d give almost anything
for the marvelous unparalleled possession of wings
There is, now admit it, a plethora of joyful things
which, in our agedness, we sometimes lose capacity to experience

I draw satisfaction from lizards
hugging the earth in a hot-felt embrace
and protecting the plants from a scourge of insects
And rainbows; who could conjure up anything more radically, frivolously lovely
only pure, unadulterated, impractical beauty
And that love that even exist!
Such a unique, surreal trait
This, too, gives me immeasurable content

I sip happiness when I can
It arrives at odd moments, lives for an instant
rooted in the earth’s richness
All the colours, the fragrance
Fires flaring ruby and amber, the quetzal’s breast bragging an emerald and scarlet,
Stalactites, stalagmites, icicles, volcanoes, hoar frost, coral reefs
sculpting themselves in elemental beauty beyond belief
Cats engender kittens, over and over, in ecstasy
And even I, my darling, am unmitigatedly happy: occasionally
