The Sun God

by Clover Kreger, written in the highlands of Bali

The cat grinning into the sunshine postures with great reverence
Eyes tight shut, sitting straight up, fur warm in sweet deference
Worshipping that power which pleasures nerve ends:
The Sun God. The Sun God’s the cat’s friend
The enigmatic cat knows what it’s all about:
Only death and darkness will remain
When the Sun God’s gone out.
