The Unicorn of Morn
by Clover Kreger
I am the unicorn
of morn
alabaster hooves cutting capers, dancing
in an ecstasy of being, prancing
in the moss-embossed forests of my fantasies
where I glow like snow among the dark-boned trees
I'm incandescent: even in incessant rain I shine
radiating mists and moonlight as I dine
draining the night dry, like wine,
my moist breath beading drops of dew
refreshing tender seedlings anew
I am the unicorn,
mother of pearl horn,
who escorts the night into the day
long have I lived this way,
galloping wildly, and yet,
my only hoofprints, the wet,
which spangles the earth
Life itself is my worth
I sow growth, death, rebirth
Laying waste to the night
I summon the light.
