Nascent Morning in the Mountains
by Clover Kreger, written near Mount Cook, South Island, New Zealand
Inching in, an emerald tinge supplants the ebony
while objects muster force to reappear
and the day trickles in, tenuous and fuzzy,
but the mountain's silhouette is clear
A paper cut-out held aloft
harsh against the pale, pastel sky,
though its lower contours, rather shy
seep slowly, still vague, into the viewer's eye
The valley's edge expounds the greatest show
cradling a ruby smear which hovers low
intersected with dark streaks of greyish cloud
tendering the effect of a temporal shroud
The very last of the night sky's inhabitants,
a silvery-white, alluring, shining planet
erased completely by the strongest star
No other sky-borne body is on par
The sun hones delicate details into view
A master showman, creating every day anew
Who paints the snow rose, and evaporates the dew
and chases darkness into caves and crevices
thereby answering the daylight creatures' wishes
presenting them with another day of golden light
Hot upon the heels of the night,
that blossoms forth with a ruddy splendour
which only the dawn, or the dusk, can tender
